Children on Farms

With the school holidays starting soon is time to turn your mind to the risks your farm might present to children on the farm, not just your own but visitors, particularly where they are not aware of the dangers that farms can present.

Around 10 children are fatally injured on Australian farms each year and 500 are hospitalised for on-farm injury. Drowning and quads are now the equal leading causes of on-farm deaths for children. For children under five years, the greatest risk is drowning in farm dams, followed by runovers or falls from vehicles, including quads, cars and utes.

FarmSafe Australia has a number of great resources to assist in assessing the risks to children on farms and ways to minimise the risks with simple checklists. Click here to download a two page guide to help you ensure that all children on your property are safe and able to enjoy what can be a great and inspirational time.
